  • QueerGarden Festival on July 8 and 9, 2023 from 12 to 6 pm
  • art market, entertainment and discussions, BBQ and much more
  • prideART invites you to “The Knast” in Berlin Lichterfelde

In the weeks of Pride Month leading up to the Pride March (Christopher Street Day), the freedom and diversity of the LGBTQI+ community is celebrated in many countries. Everywhere in Berlin, numerous Pride parades, celebrations and events show the proud, queer face of the city. Not only Berlin Mitte or the Schöneberger Regebogenkiez, but also the southwest of Berlin invites to this occasion:

In beautiful Berlin Lichterfelde, prideART Berlin e.V. is organizing a queer summer festival in close cooperation with the owners of the former (women’s) prison “The Knast” and the Wirtschaftsförderung Steglitz-Zehlendorf.

Under the motto “QueerGarden: Art and Culture in The Knast” a great festival with art, entertainment and discussions will take place on the weekend of July 8 and 9, 2023, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. in this special event location with its large garden. Pride Month will be celebrated with the opening of the recurring summer exhibition “Intersectional 5.0” by prideART Berlin e.V., whose vernissage will be on July 6. The artists will be present at the summer festival.

Residents from Steglitz-Zehlendorf and visitors from other districts or from the surrounding areas of Berlin will be offered two days full of highlights from the queer art and culture world: In addition to a queer art market and insights into the exhibition Intersectional 5.0 there will be a diverse program with performance and music. Queer topics are discussed in open dialogue formats and the artists present give visitors direct insights into their studios and work processes. During guided tours of the former prison complex, interested visitors learn exciting facts and anecdotes about its history and the ongoing renovation work.

Food is available: coffee and cake, drinks and barbecue can be purchased on site.

QueerGarden expands the program around the recurring “Intersectional” exhibition of prideART Berlin e.V. and invites Berliners and visitors to (better) get to know the vivid art and culture location The Knast in the southwest of the city. An important concern of the organizers and sponsors is that the queer community in Steglitz-Zehlendorf gains visibility and awareness and is strengthened in the long term. This also supports visitBerlin’s goal of promoting tourism in Berlin’s outer districts.
The owner is converting the former (women’s) prison in Lichterfelde into an event, gastronomy and hotel facility at great expense and in compliance with the protection of historical monuments. The queer artists’ association prideART Berlin e.V. moved from Lichtenberg to Lichterfelde in 2022, where the artists now use the former cells as ateliers and exhibition spaces for their work.

The event is sponsored and supported by the Wirtschaftsförderung Steglitz-Zehlendorf, the Senatsverwaltung für Wirtschaft, Energie und Betriebe and visitBerlin.

Please note that the offer is intended exclusively for adults.
Access is barrier-free in the ground floor area, disabled WC only on the 1st floor via the stairs.
